Tim, it's neat to hear that you are still learning and trying to make sense of musical notes, scales, modes, etc. Your point about there always being another musical mountain peak to climb no matter how many you have summited is interesting. It's also daunting to someone like me who is still in the foothills of his musical journey, but I'm trying to put one foot in front of the other and enjoying it.
I have a question. Do all or most songwriters, especially the ones mentioned in your post, understand the structure and relationships between the modes at a high level, or do many simply understand what sounds good and right to them for a particular song and are writing and playing primarily by ear and experience?
